Just A Stressful Holiday?
We’re
in
that time
again when our
brain can
run 100 kilometers
per hour trying to
complete the mile-long checklist we have prepared.
We’re in that season again when the world’s attention is turned to Pretty Lights, Packages, and other Pleasantries. We’re in that time again when our brain can run 100 kilometers per hour trying to complete the mile-long checklist we have prepared. These and more, can steal the people’s attention away from the Reason for the Season. Our economic and political situation do make the Christmas season looks gloomy to many – especially to those who don’t have anything at all! To others, Christmas is just a holiday – a stressful one at that. It’s a time for buying gifts that didn’t need to be bought out of a budget that couldn’t afford them.
As they say, Christmas is a time of giving. And that means Christmas is a time of shopping. Ever since the wise men from the east showed up at the stable carrying gold, frankincense, and myrrh, people have been exchanging gifts at Christmas. Of course, it’s much more complicated today than it was for the wise men. For one thing, they didn’t have to contend with shopping malls, all packed full of parents going from store to store to store, desperately searching for a toy or dress. The magi didn’t have to worry about sizes, or colors, or return policies. There were no bicycles in those days, no life-size Barbies, and definitely no robot dogs. Just plain old gold, frankincense and myrrh. Also, it’s a time for squeezing par-ties and extra events into a schedule that was already too full. It’s a time in which many feel rushed and overcommitted when what they really need is to slow down and enjoy the season.
Christmas is about the Eternal Son of God!
So beloved, before anything else, Christmas is about a baby born 2,000 years ago. But He’s not just a child…He’s a special and unique child whose birth announcement was made 700 years before He was born! Who is this baby? Whose child is this? What kind of child is He? This child is the Eternal Son of God! I cannot imagine what it meant for the eternal God, who created the cosmos and all the life which is in it, to become a helpless infant. It stretches the mind beyond its limits. It is easier for us to think of a child of promise in the cradle than it is for us to imagine the Christ, who is God and rules in heaven, being born into the world. We understand babies, but we do not understand God becoming a baby.
In that Cradle lay the Hope of all the Ages

We have to understand that there is more to the story than a baby in the manger. In that cradle lay the hope of the ages. In that stall was the salvation of the world. The story about a child being born is true and it is wonderful, but we have to go beyond being charmed by it and be changed by it. We have to see beyond the tradition and be transformed. We have to go beyond the admiration of a child to the adoration of a Savior. We do not truly understand Christmas until we find ourselves on our knees in worship. So, before anything else, rearrange your plans, refocus your mind, and realign your heart to His as we embark into the Christmas season – for indeed, Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior, is the Reason for the Season!
