A tree fell and it caught our TV cable that made it snap and resulted in a 2-day cable-less existence. That was ok. No big deal. But when our internet connection, for whatever reason it was cut off, that’s another story. It affected me, my work and the kids…their assignments and all! Now that’s a big deal! One day without it…it was okay. 2nd day, it’s still kind of ok, but when it was 3rd day, we all started squirming, feeling restless, incomplete that we can’t connect. Yes, Globelines took a long time coming to fix it. But then, I realized something. Those times without TV cable and internet connection were actually a good thing. We had more time together as a family, more time with the Lord in prayer and His Word, more time with just thinking, meditating, just there being still before the Lord. And I really began to like it.

We had more time together as a family, more time with the Lord in prayer and His Word, more time with just thinking, meditating, just there being still before the Lord. And I really began to like it.

“Our modern age suffers from a great lack of depth in our walk with the Lord…”

I think of the early church that had not much distractions like we do today. What we have in this present time produces shallow relationship with God. Our modern age suffers from a great lack of depth in our walk with the Lord. Many distractions work against a deep, substantial relationship. Jesus said that in the last days, the love of most would grow cold (Matt. 24:12). He warned about the traps that would hinder a deep relationship with Himself. He mentioned the cares of this life: the pressures of making a living, the deceitfulness of riches, and the desire for more and more things (see Matt. 13:3-23).

"We know a little about everything, but not much about anything..."

Our electronic age brings further distractions. Television, telephones, cellphones, the world wide web and computer games constantly flood our minds with all kinds of stimuli and ideas, gobbling up time we might have spent in meditation upon God. We are living in an age when man has become very, very broad, but not very deep. Through the mass media we can now bring up many subjects. We know a little about everything, but not much about anything. And our relationship with God has suffered as a result. In many ways, the days of the apostles were far better to our own. More readily than today, they were able to have the kind of communion and fellowship with God that creates character God can use. Think about Paul, the apostle, when he walked from Jerusalem to Caesarea, about a three-day journey. He wasn’t listening to music or keeping up on the local news. He was surrounded by nature – by the trees, the flowers, the animals. At night he would wrap himself in his blanket and look up at the stars. How could he not think about God and His creation and His works? Solitude is very conducive to communion with God, to meditation on God.

" In Solitude... Stop, look and listen to the God who made you... He wants an intimate relationship with you."

Today, in a fast-paced, crowded, information-overload generation, you’ve got so much stimuli coming into your brain that you can’t commune with God and have a time of real spiritual enrichment. Our whole society and manner of living has taken us away from simplicity. We are not as close to God as the saints of old, and that may be one reason why we do not see much of His power evidence today as it was back then. Because a prayer-less Christian is a powerless Christian. A deep-abiding faith in God is nurtured in solitude.

So, beloved, from time to time, turn off that TV, close that computer, shut off that cellphone…and listen. Stop, look and listen to the God who made you – He who desires to be with you and show you things in His Word; He who loves you and wants an intimate relationship with you.

Most of us were glued to our Television last Wednesday as we watched another historic event in our country, the inauguration of our 15th president, Benigno Aguino III. We heard his speech, simple and straight to the point, promises were made, as usual, but spoken straight from the heart, to the heart of the Filipino people…a people longing for true change. So, we all wish, hope and pray. And we can certainly contribute to this change as citizens of this country. But one thing is missing, one thing is lacking, one thing never emphasized…and it’s the most important of all – the God of the change! For only He, through Jesus Christ, can bring true change. It all starts in the inner recesses of man – the heart. And only He, who searches hearts and minds, He who weighs every motives and intentions of the heart can reach it, mold and shape it….even cleanse it – making it new. And that is through the gospel of Jesus Christ! Nothing less, nothing more, nothing else.

This is then we, who call ourselves followers of Christ, come in to effect change. How? Colossians 4:5-6 tells us how (Go read it) – First is PRAYER – Pray for open doors (and hearts) to share Christ in your workplace, neighborhood, home and wherever you are. Always be in prayer mode. Second is BE WISE IN THE WAY WE ACT – To be wise in the way we walk means that we’re careful not to say or do anything that would make it difficult to share the gospel. Often this simply means that we need to remember that those who don’t yet know Christ are watching us. Beloved, we need to be careful about the way we act because people are making decisions about the validity of Christianity based upon how we’re living. Somebody wrote – “I’d rather see a sermon than hear one any day, I’d rather one would walk with me than merely tell the way, the eye’s a better pupil and more willing than the ear; Fine counsel is confusing, but example’s always clear.” When we pray, God will give us open doors, let’s not shut them by our behavior! But rather, allow our behavior to be the means that God uses to open doors.

Third, MAKE THE MOST OF EVERY OPPORTUNITY – This phrase is a commercial term and means to “buy up.” It’s the picture of finding something on sale and buying all you can afford because the price is so good. Likewise, we’re to buy up every opportunity to speak for Christ when we see one. Time is short, life is short. Every moral decision is important, every opportunity is important. It’s going so fast. Make it count. How? Redeem it. Find ways in which you can say, `I don’t need to waste this time because I don’t have a lot of time left!’ And fourthly, GRACIOUS SPEECH – Our wise walk should lead to wise words. If our actions are right, then we will earn a hearing. Don’t blow that opportunity by using words that are harsh, judgmental and hard to understand. Use words that are gracious, merciful and will make people want to hear more. How can we make the gospel attractive to them if our talk doesn’t match our walk? May our confession match our profession!

Beloved, we are not called to be so heavenly minded with no earthly good, for we are the salt of the earth and the light of the world. Live it out and true change will happen through the power of the Spirit of Christ!

It’s almost a month now after Election day and our next President is not yet been proclaimed…even with the automated machines! We’re hearing a lot of issues tossed around and debated at Congress. Let’s just pray that God’s will and purpose will prevail in such a time as this. Now while it’s important to be wise and responsible citizens, it’s even more important to remember that, as Christians, we are ultimately citizens of a different country – heaven. (Phil.3:20) For the believers heaven is our homeland. Although we live in this world, we do not belong here. Scripture tells us we are here as a stranger and aliens (1 Pet.2:11). We are journeying through this world to our eternal home.

Now, the greek word translated “citizenship” is the word from which we get the english word “politics” – and it has to do with one’s behavior as a citizen of a nation. In other words, our destination is not just heaven but that we are to live as citizens of heaven; we are to behave as citizens of heaven, worthy of our King. Is our life worthy of Jesus if we refuse to forgive those who offended us, if we harbor bitterness in our hearts? Is it worthy of Jesus when the world see us fighting among ourselves? Is it worthy of Jesus when we live like the world, with its attitudes and philosophies? Heavenly conduct should mark the Christian.

...as you walk daily with God on this earth, remember to keep a Kingdom perspective.

When Jesus walked the earth, He ushered in a new kingdom which is unlike any other known to man. In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus proclaimed the Kingdom of God long promised by the Old Testament prophets. His manifesto contained radical new ideas: “Blessed are the poor in spirit . . . Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake . . . Blessed are the peacemakers . . .” (Matt. 5:3, 9, 10). Unlike politicians of modern times, Jesus was not concerned with popular opinion; He was concerned with speaking the truth. As Sovereign of this new kingdom, He calls His subjects to that same standard.

Matthew 6:33 challenges us to “seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.” In a society that encourages self-promotion, God calls us to live in a radically counter-cultural manner. Speaking of those who are entrenched in the kingdom of this world, Jesus says, “do not be like them. For your Father knows the things you have need of before you ask Him” (Matt. 6:8). The subjects of God’s Kingdom walk to the beat of a different drummer. While we should be concerned with the present political environment, our primary focus should be on those things of eternal consequence.

So, fellow pilgrim, as you walk daily with God on this earth, remember to keep a Kingdom perspective.

But what do I mean with that?

BLESSING. We like that word. Besides God is God of blessing. He does want to bless His people. Just about every time I pray for someone, for anyone, I pray that God may richly bless them. But what do I mean with that? Depending on what our understanding of blessing is, it can mean very different things. So in the Sermon of the Mount, Jesus gives us a whole other meaning to the word “blessing”. There are two basic measures of blessing. There are worldly measures, and there is a Godly measure. Jesus only has one measure. But the world has many. The Jews of Jesus’ time used worldly measures of their blessings. By the world’s measure, if you are rich, successful, happy and popular, that means you are blessed by God. By the same token, the world says that if you are poor, miserable, ugly and rejected, you have a disability, then you or someone in your family has done something to displease God.

Blessings, by worldly standards, are understood as circumstances. There are possessions, independence, fame, power. All those things are located in the realm of this world. Now don’t misunderstand, of course, God blesses us materially or financially too but that’s only a part of a greater blessing that cannot be measured by what we see nor touch. It’s within. It’s an attitude. This we see from the Beatitudes. Notice it’s a BE-attitude not a DO-attitude. It’s not a means to salvation but rather characteristics of those who have received salvation; those who are subjects of God’s kingdom, those who have submitted their lives to the King, Jesus!

The word “blessed” means “How satisfied, how fulfilled, how truly happy you are.” However, we must be careful not to reduce blessedness to merely being happy. To be “blessed” means to be approved or to find approval. In this case approved of God. And there can be no higher “blessing” than to have God’s approval, God’s favour, undeserved favour! The fundamental question is, who’s approval will you seek? Will you seek man’s approval, or God’s approval? And in the Sermon on the Mount Jesus describes the characteristics of one who has God’s approval. How? By trusting in Christ as one’s saviour and totally submitting to His lordship over our lives. That produces in us the characteristics of blessedness. Are you blessed?

There were some American soldiers stationed on a small island in the South Pacific during WWII. Monkey meat was a real delicacy on this island, and the islanders showed the Americans how they captured monkeys — 1. Put an apple in a wide-mouth jar. 2. Tie a rope around the jar. 3. Tie the other end of the rope around a tree. 4. Wait patiently.

Eventually a monkey will come along, look curiously in the jar, see the apple, reach in and grab it. The monkey’s hand easily compressed to fit into the jar but his fist, holding the apple, was too large to pull out. The monkey, however, would predictably refuse to let go of the apple. The monkey was in effect, tied to the tree by the rope, the jar and the apple. Very soon…monkey adobo! Now think about this for a moment… Was the monkey too stubborn or too stupid to let go of the apple? You know what? It really doesn’t matter. It is the same result: one dead monkey.

Now for the real question…Did the monkey have the apple or did the apple have the monkey?

It is only by letting go that we become free…

There are things that bind us. As long as we hold on to them, their power over us continues. It is only by letting go that we become free. It’s only by surrendering everything to Christ that we experience true freedom.

Now, true freedom is NOT having the freedom to do whatever you want, however you want to do it. We are free in Christ indeed. That means we have the freedom to obey God and live fruitful lives or we have the freedom not to obey Him and choose sin. If we are sincere in our faith we must not willingly abuse our freedom. Paul writes, “You, my brothers, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the sinful nature” (Galatians 5:13). Jesus didn’t set us free to give us an excuse for sinning. He set us free from sin so we could enjoy a relationship with the Father. He set us free so we might choose to obey and serve Him with sincerity of heart.

We are free to choose the best…

You see freedom has boundaries in order to keep us safe. In Christ we have freedom – within the boundaries of God’s Word. We are free from the punishment of sin, from eternal death, from the past, from fear of the future, but we are not autonomous. We are not free to do our own thing. We are not free from responsibility. We are not free to sin. In fact the Bible says that we are not our own we were bought with a price. That means we belong to Jesus! So it’s not me who is in-charge anymore – it’s Him!

So when Jesus sets us free… We are free to rise above our sin. We are free to live a holy life. We are free to finally CHOOSE what is right. We are free to choose the best. We are free to keep growing. We are free to reach the potential for which God has designed us! Live free!

The greatest conflict taking place in the world today is the battle for control of our minds…

You see, what feeds our fears and anxieties are an unhealthy thinking. What intensifies our worries is having negative and bad thoughts. It’s in the mind where worries and fears find their nest. The battle is in the mind. Wrong thinking leads to wrong feelings and before long the heart and mind are pulled apart and we are strangled by worry and paralyzed by fear. Somebody wrote, “Sow a thought, reap an action. Sow an action, reap a habit. Sow a habit, reap a character. Sow a character, reap a destiny.”

The battle for any temptation in your life begins in your mind; regardless of what the temptation is, the battle begins in our mind. What we think about, we will eventually feel, and what we feel we will eventually act on. Beloved, pay attention to what you are thinking about. Don’t allow your mind to wander in all kinds of directions. Instead we are to think of whatever is “true, noble, right, pure, lovely, and admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things (Phil.4:8)!

Here are 8 filters. Everything we hear & everything we see need to pass through them. And if it doesn’t make it through these 8 filters then it shouldn’t be in our mind & in our heart. These are guidelines for us to have good discernment in a world that is full of lies and impurities! There is so much garbage in this world. And the old saying “garbage in, garbage out” is true. So think about it.

We are commanded to have pure thoughts, to have minds focused on what pleases God…

Church, we are commanded to have pure thoughts, to have minds focused on what pleases God. The Christian life is to be marked by a holy mind-set – that leads to holy living. We of course do this through the Word of God, giving regular, focused attention to the Bible, opening our minds to its truths, wanting God to mold our thinking by His Word. We do this through fellowship with our brothers and sisters in Christ, building each other up. And through the working of His Holy Spirit in us!

So, WHAT’S ON YOR MIND?

And sometimes hours are spent just to get into all that! Now I wonder…how many followers of Christ spend time in their Bible reading it, meditating on it, studying it with the desire to apply it in their lives? I know one thing based on observation – there are many who are ignorant of the Scriptures. Just to give you an example of the Bible ignorance, here’s an excerpt from an article — in it contains real answers given on a Bible knowledge test –

People who said they knew their Bible gave the following answers: 1) Noah’s wife was Joan of Ark; 2) Lot’s wife was a pillar of salt by the day and a ball of fire by night; 3) Moses went to the top of Mount Cyanide to get the Ten Commandments; 4) The seventh commandment is, “Thou shalt not admit adultery;” 5) Jesus was born because Mary had an immaculate contraption; 6) The people who followed Jesus were called decibels; 7) The epistles were the wives of the apostles; 8 ) Paul preached acrimony, which is another name for marriage; 9) David fought the Finklesteins, which is a race of people who lived in Bible times; 10) A Christian should have only one wife. This is called monotony!

I know it’s funny…but it’s serious at the same time! How can we expect to make a difference in this fallen, self-centered world when the very thing that can bring a change, God’s Word, is not known by those who claim to be followers of it? The members of a certain Chinese church used to have a saying, “No Bible – No Breakfast.” If we follow that motto, I wonder how many of us would go hungry!

For the unbelievers you cannot really expect them to have the right answers. But it is tragic when a person who calls himself a Christian is ignorant of the Word. Ignorance of the Word is ignorance of the Lord. Not knowing the God of the Word is an invitation for deception. And of course, it’s even more tragic when we claim we’re Christian, attend Bible studies and even occupy positions in church yet completely live lives that are opposite biblical teachings. We can know our doctrines, the Bible characters, know the Greek and the Hebrew, but if it’s not translated into daily living and becoming more like Jesus, it’s indeed a tragedy. In this situation, the opposite of biblical knowledge is not ignorance but simply disobedience!

So beloved, log off from Facebook, Myspace, Multiply, Twitter, etc…and be logged on to His Word! It’s a shame to have all the knowledge and infos the internet provides but so lacking and “niwang” about His life-giving and life-changing personal encounter with His UNCHANGING WORD!

What a blessing to see God’s people worship in unison…

The H4U Dipolog trip is indeed a success! We have seen how His Word instruct, correct, rebuke, encourage and build up His people in the worship seminar. How hungry indeed are His people for the teaching of His Word. Can you imagine: it’s supposed to be “snack-time” (break time) and yet they didn’t want the snacks, they want “real food” from His Word! So we continued until lunch break! What a joy to serve God’s people in that way.

In the morning of Sunday, we were also given the privilege to lead worship and teach the Word in a church where we held our Night of Psalms. It was sweet and beautiful! And the Night of Psalms? It’s just amazing! It was full packed (overflowed outside the church building), it was hot (there’s no air conditioning, just electric fans), and you can feel the sticky air! But the beautiful thing is…the worshippers didn’t mind all these! The place was just saturated with praises for Jesus, our King!

And that’s what true worship is – “Worship is that adorning attitude of reverence that is lost in the glory and wonder of all that God is and does!” What a blessing to see God’s people worship in unison, with one voice and sound, with one heart and mind, not minding the comforts, setting aside denominational barriers and forgetting about themselves and focusing on who really is the object of worship – Jesus Christ our Lord!

Now do you know what happens when we worship God in spirit and in truth? It results in –
First, It will revitalize our walk with Him – Zech.14:17! Are you here this morning worshiping God in spirit and in truth? Or are you just going through the motions? If you are a Christian, have you lost that wonder and the sense of awe of God? That passionate love for Him? That desire to bless Him, not only to be blessed? That heart that is lost in Him (that you are not always looking at your watch, but you are so lost in Him that you are looking to Him, loving every minute of it?) If not, then God wants to revitalize your relationship with Him? How? You need to begin to worship Him. Go back to your “first love.”

The second thing that happens is that one finds that his conscience is quickened by God’s holiness – thus he lives a sanctified life (or separated life). That’s what happened to Isaiah in the 6th chapter. And thirdly, true worship results in witness and Christian service. Don’t say you are a worshiper of God when you don’t want to share it to anyone! A true worshiper worships God with his/her life. He’s a witness to the One true God who is Jesus Christ!

Who are you worshiping?...

Everyone is a worshipper. Everyone has a master passion, a controlling force. Everyone has something that dominates them. Everyone has something that they're devoted to. The question is not - "Are you a worshiper?" But the question is, "Who are you worshiping?" This is important because "You'll become what you worship!" (Ps.115:8). The highest priority of our life is to worship God.

God is calling us back to the most wonderful experience and act He has privileged us to have and do -- worship. We were created to know Him, fellowship with Him, to worship Him and to enjoy Him forever!

What is a hero? How does a hero look like in the eyes of God?

Today is National Heroes Day, a day of remembering those who have died in our nation’s service. We won’t be enjoying the freedom we have today without these people’s heroism. But let me ask you: what is a hero? Well, a flip through a dictionary can show you a number of definitions. But what I want to focus on is how does a hero look like in the eyes of God? Hebrews 11 provides us with a list of some of God’s past heroes. They were ordinary people who were used by God. Everyone here can be one of God’s heroes. But what does it take to be a true hero, a Christian hero? You see, a Christian hero is not some superman, endowed with a myriad of abilities and talents. It is an individual who is willing to believe God’s Word, commit himself to God’s Will, and devote himself to God’s Work.

Belief in God’s Word - Today, many looked up to sport stars and athletes, movie stars and musicians as heroes. They are seen, as heroes because in many ways they do things that most of us can’t. But God’s heroes, the heroes of the Bible, were not men and women of extraordinary ability or talent but men and women of extraordinary faith. Every individual listed in Hebrews 11 took God at His Word. From Abraham to Moses to Joseph, etc…

Commitment to God’s Will – (Read Hebrews 11:13-16). “It does not take great men to do great things; it only takes consecrated men.” (Phillips Brooks). Who is a hero? He who conquers his will and surrenders to God’s will! Jesus, our greatest and ultimate hero exemplified it when at the Garden He prayed, “Not My will but Your will be done!” (Matthew 26:39). The Holy Spirit chooses the nobodies of the church and makes them somebody when they are committed to God’s will in their lives. The most powerful weapon on earth is the human soul on fire for God. We are to be consecrated not to Christian work, but to the will of God, to be and to do whatever He requires.

”Give me a hundred men who fear nothing but sin, and desire nothing but God, and I will shake the world. I care not a straw whether they be clergymen or laymen; and such alone will overthrow the kingdom of Satan and build up the kingdom of God on earth”. (James S. Hewett)

…the heroes of faith – those who Believe in God’s Word, Committed to God’s will and Devoted to God’s Work.

Devoted to God’s Work – Heroism is faith transformed into action. Matthew 23:11 “He that is greatest among you shall be your servant.” There is a Norwegian Proverb that says’ A hero is one who knows how to hang on one minute longer.” In Christ’s service, the heroes are those who work until Christ says it’s time to stop. So beloved, here are the heroes of faith – those who Believe in God’s Word, Committed to God’s will and Devoted to God’s Work. How about you?

An isolated Christian cannot minister to others, nor can others minister to him, and it is impossible for the gifts to be ministered either way…

“From him the whole body, joined and held together by every supporting ligament, grows and builds itself up in love, as each part does its work.” (Eph.4:16) – Last Sunday was an awesome sight to me. Coming together as one family worshiping Jesus together. How God has indeed increased our numbers. But more than numbers I pray that everyone will continue to grow in quality. And this cannot happen without each other. It’s the “joints and ligaments” that connect us with other parts of the Body as we rub up against each other and lean on each other and cooperate with each other. These supporting ligaments refer to the times we study God’s Word together and when we serve together side by side. It is these joints in the body that keep all the parts of the Body interdependent on each other.

I can’t imagine a body without any joints, can you? Without the joints, we’d be a sorry dislocated mess! We need those connection points of fellowship in order to grow in Christ in love. It has been discovered that isolated, unloved babies do not grow properly and are especially susceptible to disease, while babies who are loved and handled grow normally and are stronger. SO it is with the children of God. An isolated Christian cannot minister to others, nor can others minister to him, and it is impossible for the gifts to be ministered either way. Some of us need to make that decision to get more closely connected in fellowship with other members of the Body today.

The body grows as each part of the body does its work. One part stops working and the whole body is affected. When a cell in the body revolts and stops functioning and starts attacking its own, the body becomes sick. So does in the local church. Your inactivity affects the whole church. Oh yes we can still function, we can still move forward, but may not be as effective as when everybody does its part. Instead of a blessing one may become a burden. Instead of being part of the solution one becomes the problem! But as each part of the local Body of Christ uses his or her spiritual gift to serve in a ministry, the result is that the church grows and becomes healthy — but only as each part does its work. Some of us need to make that decision to be willing to do our part of the ministry, starting today.

Christ wants you to do in His Body exactly what He’s made you to do…

There are no unnecessary parts in the Body of Christ! There are no little people in the family of God. Even if you think of yourself as just a big toenail, just imagine how it would hurt the whole Body if you became ingrown! If you are a true Christian, Christ declares you to be a valuable and needed part of this church. You are a specialized part. No one else can do what you can do as well as you can do it. You cannot be replaced with a substitute part any more than a surgeon can replace a defective stomach with a pair of lungs. Christ wants you to do in His Body exactly what He’s made you to do because you, as an individual, really do count.

God stimulates us to grow through the process of giving each one of us a ministry, a ministry that forces us to learn and stretch and grow up. It’s a good plan. Our Heavenly Father thought it up. It’s God’s healthy plan for a healthy church.

The church is the gathering of God’s children…

Welcome! Glad that you all can join in our Family Fellowship today. “Family” because we are a family in Christ. Before the church was the institution, as we know it today, the church was a family. “While Jesus was still talking to the crowd, his mother and brothers stood outside, wanting to speak to him. Someone told him, “Your mother and brothers are standing outside, wanting to speak to you.” He replied to him, “Who is my mother, and who are my brothers?” Pointing to his disciples, he said, “Here are my mother and my brothers. For whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother and sister and mother.” (Matt.12:47-50)

It was and is a place of fathers and mothers in the faith, brothers and sisters in Christ, as well as, elderly saints and newborn babies in the faith. The church is the gathering of God’s children, where they can be helped and fed like babies and then, guided by her motherly care, grow up to manhood in maturity of faith. If you are born again, washed by the blood of Jesus, trusting in Christ alone for your salvation, then you are a brother or a sister in Christ.

Beloved, there is a deeper and stronger relationship we have as Christians than our natural families who are unsaved. Isn’t that true? I’m sure you already have noticed that. I’m really closer to you than my cousins or my other relatives who do not know the Lord! I have shared the gospel to most of them but until they accept Jesus, we really have nothing in common where we can really share and have fellowship. Now our Lord was not suggesting that believers ignore or abandon their families in order to serve God, but only that we put God’s will above everything else in life. Certainly it is God’s will that we care for our families and provide for them (see 1 Tim. 5:8), but we must not permit even our dearest loved ones to influence us away from the will of God.

So what is it that characterizes the person who is spiritually related to Christ? What is the indication that we are indeed part of God’s family? Because we go to church? Is it because we carry our Bible? Is it because we speak Christian lingo? No, if we hear God’s Word and put it into practice! That’s always the challenge for every hearer of God’s Word. Many church-goers tend to regard sermon-listening as an end in itself. Others look at it as an “escape” or a “substitute” for obedience. But God wants transformation from listening into living! And there’s one key ingredient for this to happen – faith…believing in what God has said, for we cannot really apply God’s Word without believing it. What moves us to obey is because we believe God will do what He said He will do! Faith in God’s Word moves us to action. You see, the Word of God feeds faith (Faith comes from hearing and hearing the word of Christ -Rom.10:17), and faith leads to obedience (Rom.1:5)!

God wants transformation from listening into living! And there’s one key ingredient for this to happen – faith…

May we, who call on the same Father, trust the same Savior Jesus Christ, in the fellowship of the same Spirit, come together now and offer Him our love Him and worship and live a life of obedience that He may be glorified in us!

His name is Bill. He has wild hair, wears a T-shirt with holes in it, jeans and no shoes. This was literally his wardrobe for his entire four years of college. He is brilliant. Kinda esoteric and very, very bright. He became a Christian while attending college. Across the street from the campus is a well-dressed, very conservative church. They want to develop a ministry to the students, but are not sure how to go about it. One day Bill decides to go there. He walks in with no shoes, jeans, his T-shirt, and wild hair. The service has already started and so Bill starts down the aisle looking for a seat. The church is completely packed and he can’t find a seat.

By now people are looking a bit uncomfortable, but no one says anything. Bill gets closer and closer to the pulpit and when he realizes there are no seats, he just squats down right on the carpet. (Although perfectly acceptable behavior at a college fellowship, this had never happened in this church before!)

By now the people are really uptight, and the tension in the air is thick. About this time, the minister realizes that from way at the back of the church, a deacon is slowly making his way toward Bill. Now the deacon is in his seventies, has silver-gray hair, a three-piece suit, and a pocket watch. A godly man, very elegant, very dignified.. He walks with a cane and as he starts walking toward this boy, everyone is saying to themselves, You can’t blame him for what he’s going to do. How can you expect a man of his age and of his background to understand some college kid on the floor? It takes a long time for the man to reach the boy.

The church is utterly silent except for the clicking of the man’s cane. All eyes are focused on him. You can’t hear anyone breathing. The people are thinking, the minister can’t even preach the sermon until the deacon does what he has to do. And now, they see this elderly man drop his cane on the floor. With great difficulty he lowers himself and sits down next to Bill and worships with him so he won’t be alone.

Everyone chokes up with emotion. When the minister gains control he says, “What I’m about to preach, you will never remember. WHAT YOU HAVE JUST SEEN, YOU WILL NEVER FORGET.” “Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves. Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also the interests of others. Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus…”- Philippians 2:3-5.

What is the most dangerous place in the world? A war zone certainly qualifies. The jungles of Africa can seem very dangerous, especially at night, when wild animals run right through the safari camp. You can hear animal sounds like you have never heard before in your life. That’s a scary place to be. But did you ever think that one of the most dangerous places you can be is right in church? Attending church can be hazardous to your spiritual health if you are coming for the wrong reason.

Why is it hazardous?

Why is it hazardous? Because you are exposed to truth. If you have no intention of putting that truth into practice into your life, your church can actually be one of the worst places to be. It’s a dangerous thing to hear the gospel without any intention of applying it in your life. You may be fooling yourself. Are you in church because other people are? Are you going because it’s popular? Or are you going to church because you have made the decision to follow Christ? Jesus said, ” ‘If anyone serves Me, let him follow Me; and where I am, there My servant will be also. If anyone serves Me, him My Father will honor’ ” (John 12:26). When I signed up to follow Jesus, I didn’t sign up to do what other people were doing. I signed up to be His follower no matter what. He will stand by you as you follow Him, and God will honor you.

Doing it His way and not mine

During His earthly ministry Jesus faced the problem of people who would follow Him for the wrong reasons. He was constantly challenging them to count the cost and to make sure that their motives were right. He wants us all to follow Him, but He wants us to do it for the right reasons. To truly come to know God I must come on His terms and not my own. I must do it His way and not mine. It is not for me to pick and choose the commandments in the Bible that personally appeal to me or the attributes that I personally find interesting or appealing. It is for me to live life God’s way or not to follow Him at all.

Choose Christ, choose life abundantly!

If you are primarily interested in what is cool or what is hip or what is socially acceptable, I need to tell you right now that following Jesus Christ probably won’t work into your plans. But if you are interested in what is right and what is the best way to spend your life, and if you are interested in the hope of heaven and a life with meaning, then there are no other options to choose from. Choose Christ, choose life abundantly!
